Memorial Day Weekend

2nd annual risotto cookoff

It was the quietest Memorial Day Weekend for me in many years, but I liked it. I didn’t attend any drunken rooftop parties. I didn’t drink out of a red Solo cup.

I ate lots of risotto at the 2nd Annual Risotto Cookoff.
I bought a pretty pink chain and pearl necklace from Issy Salomon.
I went to a surprise birthday party.
I sung karaoke.
I watched “Wendy and Lucy” on DVD.
I made a sardine, feta cheese and chickpea salad.
I went to Kitty Nights Burlesque.
I walked around Prospect Park.
I went to see “Duplicity”.

The Week In Links (Scones, Parties, Crafts)

cherry and raisin scones

Sunday, I made scones for the very first time. Inspired by a recipe I saw in Parade, I altered the raisin scone recipe and include fresh cherries. Yum!

Saturday, I volunteered at Junior Achievement. Talking to high school kids was great!  They have both hope and hustle.

Friday,  I did Jelly co-working at Winter Garden. It has been years since I have been there.  I used to work at Deloitte and Touche at World Financial Center, and I still get a little anxious even though I wasn’t in NYC on 9/11, but I had worked there until May 2001.  Tried to walk across the skywalk was impossible for me.  My heart started racing just walking up the stairs, and I feared a panic attack was coming on. I took the long way walking across the busy West Street which is more precarious because of the traffic. Anyway, I had fun at Jelly, and actually got some work done.

Thursday, I did a bookkeeping talk at New Work City. Here’s the outline of my presentation.

Wednesday, I went to the Curator’s Reception for the NY Photo Festival.

Tuesday, I partied  with fellow Foodbuzz bloggers at David Burke Townhouse.

Monday, I cupcake-crafted at Etsy Labs.

The Mid-Week O’ Links

I am either getting off schedule or trying to blog here twice a week.
Yesterday, I attended the New York Tech Meetup. There were great presentations by Apture, Behance’s Action Method, ExZact, BeamMePitch Sesame Vault and Zemanta. BTW, I am using Zemanta to write this blog post.

I am on the community committee so feel free to contact about upcoming meetups and the big Demo Pit that will take place during Internet Week.

Monday, I shopped a little at New York and Company which always something I love.

Sunday, I flew back from Durham after some quality time with my family.

I recommend checking out Sugar Stacks to find out how much sugar is in what you are eating. I try to save my sugar intake for cupcakes. Speaking of cupcakes, there’s the Cupcake Social on Thursday and Cupcake Crafting at Etsy Labs on Monday. Join the Cupcakes Take The Cake Meetup Group to get the scoop.

The Week In Links (April 24 and More)

Nichelle at Re/Dress

The last week and a half has been busy. It’s Wednesday morning, which is the calm before the storm. Thursday, I leave for Durham, North Carolina for my sister’s wedding.

Last night, I saw Helvetica at the Bell House as part of “Drinks on The Doc” series presented by Brooklyn Based. It was great!

Monday, I was the guest speaker at a viral marketing class at FIT. Tina Shoulders invited me to speak to her class. I really enjoyed doing it, so hopefully I can do it again.

Sunday, I walked around Red Hook, and stopped by Baked.

Saturday was cupcake eating contest at Ivy Bakery and cupcake judging at Robicelli’s.

Friday, I was checking out the Time Square Arts Center for a comedy show.

Thursday, Cupcakes Take The Cake had a meetup at Re/Dress. I bought the lovely blazer pictured above.

The Week In Links (Solar, Green and Burn)

PV Racer
Tuesday, I stopped by the “I Heart PV” solar awareness party at Sycamore Bar. I met some cool people from Solar One and made a solar-powered toy car. It was also my first time getting off the Cortelyou subway station.
Volunteered at the 99% Conference.
Listened to great stories at In The Flesh.
Won a ticket to the Go Green Expo and stopped by on Friday afternoon.
Met fellow entrepreneurs at Biznik’s Happy Hour.
I ate cake!
Watched “Burn After Reading” on Saturday. [I need more Netflix recommendations.]
Stopped by Ivy Bakery on Sunday and got a yummy cinnamon roll.

The Week In Links: Jesus Camp, Art Openings, Cupcakes

cupcakes from cupcake camp

Tuesday, I went to The Bell House for the very first time. Brooklyn Based just started a new film series, Drinks on the Doc where they will show indie documentaries. The first one was “Jesus Camp” which is a very scary movie.
Wednesday, I bought some fly Vans sneakers.
Thursday, I check out some art in Chelsea, Sophie Calle at Paula Cooper and the Objects of Desire at Anna Kustera.
Friday, I did some co-working at Treehouse and later I went to CupcakeCampNYC.
Saturday, the boy and I went to Beer Table and got tipsy from fancy beers.
Sunday, I made macaroni and cheese for two Easter brunches.

The Week In Links (April 3): Makedown, Tailor, SM4SC

monkfish, sausage, and canneloni beans

Attended The Desk Set’s First Ever Writer Reader Book Swap and picked up a copy of The Makedown by Gitty Daneshvari. I really enjoyed the book which is about a formerly fat girl who dates a gorgeous. It’s a pretty dark comedy that could be a good movie. Actress Ginnifer Goodwin would be great as Anna.

Wednesday, The Boy and I had dinner at Tailor. It was a wonderful dining experience of sweet and savory foods.

Thursday, I volunteered a bit at the PSFK conference and hung out later for post-conference drinks.

Tonight, I am going to the Social Media for Social Change fundraiser.

The weekend will be low-key. I promise.

The Week In Links (Mach 27): Erin, Elline, Betty and Delia

An Evening of Reinvention

This week was about all the ladies which is very appropriate since it is the end of Women’s History Month.

Wednesday, I attended the book party for The Lazy Environmentalist.  Spotted Top Chef’s Gail Simmons there.  Kelly Samardak from MediaPost covered the event and took pictures.  It was great to see Alexis Tirado, Caroline Waxler and the girls from Morris+King, Katie Smith-Adair and Jen Moses.

Thursday was a night of Reinvention at SAKs.  Alyson Campbell from AMP3PR told me about her inspiring client Elline Surianello last summer, but it was like a real-live Oprah show to see Elline speak about women and hair loss. Editors from Betty Confidential were there, and I met the wonderful Annette Moore of Crowned Regal.

Saturday, I went to BAM Cafe to see Erin and Her Cello, and the show was packed. The show was enhanced by a horn section and a tap dancer, Danny Gardner. Then the boy and I headed out to Fort Greene for the monthly Dig Deeper show at the Five Spot Soul Food Supper Club.  Each month,  Dig Deeper features a live performance. Many of the artists haven’t played NYC in decades, making every show a once-in-a-lifetime affair. Delia “Dee Dee” Gartrell was the singer who threw down Saturday night. Her soulful voice filled the room. The Sweet Divines and The Divine Soul Rhythm Band backed Miss Gartrell.

The Week In Links (March 20): Buttermilk, Valentino and Brussel Sprouts

Cupcakes @Hilton Austin

Some leftover bits from SXSW. Check out these cool beans–Lauren from LifestylerMag, Leigh from PNN and Nick from Triple Pundit.

On Wednesday, I had dinner at Buttermilk Channel which is in deepest Carroll Gardens. I had the fried chicken with cheddar waffles. It was so yummy, but this is why I’m fat.

Thursday, I went to the screening of “Valentino, The Last Emperor” at the Film Forum. After the movie, Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley did a Q & A with the director Matt Tyrnauer.   Then my friends and I went over to City Winery to hang out with Christina from Glowlab Gallery.  City Winery just became my new favorite wine bar.  The brussel sprouts and chicken liver crostini there are delicious.

Friday, I stayed in. I made tuna without mayo but with a little Italian dressing.

Today, I found my quotes from the Finance 2.0 panel at SXSW on a UAE business site.
