Zuning In

By Niche

October 018

Tuesday, I went to a Microsoft part at the lovely Park Avenue Armory.  I was one of the lucky people to get a Zune HD for free. It’s a great media player, but I still need to figure out how it all works.  Now, I can listen to radio again, so I hear Jay-Z’s “Empire State Of Mind” anytime I scroll over to Hot 97.

DJ Tiesto performed at the party, and though I am not a big fan of club music, I danced my ass off. Plus the carpet on the floor made it easy to jump around.

Afterward, the Boy and I went to Rodeo Bar for dinner and saw this group, The Ukeladies. They were fun!

Nichelle likes Moo cards, originally uploaded by Rachel Kramer Bussel.

It’s Advertising Week, so I know Don Draper and the guys from Sterling Cooper will be out having cocktails and cozying up to new clients.(Ha!)

There are other things going this week including the Biddies on Monday and Neal Medlyn’s Kanye West show on Thursday.

Quirky Circus: Expect weirdness on Tuesday night at the Gershwin Hotel. Armitage Shanks, Zero Boy, Lady Rizo and Coney Island Sideshow folks. $10, 8PM

The Alcoholic: Jonathan Ames animated may seem redundant or ironic depending on when you catch him, but he’s doing a reading of new graphic novel this Wednesday at Book Court in Brooklyn at 7PM.

Cause For Drinks: Also on Wednesday, you can drink and give to a good cause at All Day Buffet’s happy hour at Gallery Bar.  BTW, are you going to The Feast Conference on October 16? I am.

Caramel Ice Cream, Sweet Music, and A Play with Balls

By Niche

caramel ice cream at NYC ICY, originally uploaded by nichellest.

After going to see Erin and Her Cello play at Ars Nova, I stopped by NYC Icy on 10th Avenue to enjoy a scoop of caramel ice cream on a sugar cone. It was delicious! I am so glad they re-opened.

BTW, Erin and Cello are playing at Joe’s Pub on Saturday, August 16. She has news songs and a wonderful cover of a Cranberries tune.

If you like to indulge in culture, check out the last performances of Prince Trevor Among The Elephants which is part of the Midtown Theatre Festival. It is a hilarious, epic fairy tale for adults with a little full front nudity!  Chicks and Giggles alum Kelli Nichols is in the play.

Purple Haze

purple haze hot dogs, originally uploaded by nichellest.

It’s been an action packed week with parties, shows, and a hot dog cook-off.

I went to Neal Medlyn’s Unpronounceable Symbol show at PS 122.  I may go again next week since Bridget Everett will be making a cameo.  The show was reviewed by the New York Times.

Thursday, I went to see Little Jackie perform at the Steve Madden store on Rivington. Their new album, The Stoop, is out now.

Friday, I chilled out with friends at Prospect Park to celebrate Brian Van’s birthday and listen to The Brazilian Girls.

Yesterday, I competed in the Third Annual Great Hot Dog Cookoff. My purple haze hot dogs are pretty and tasty.

Today, I found out that I am featured in an article about clothing swaps in New York Daily News. Yay!

Subway Crush

Erin and Her Cello, originally uploaded by Anya Garrett.

Fresh off their sold out show at Joe’s Pub, Erin and Her Cello are doing a special show with a full band on July 26th at Ars Nova. Drawing on the everyday joys and indignations of life in New York City, Erin and Her Cello offers up an evening of quirky and vivacious songs that are undeniably unique and funny as hell! Erin, a cute and kooky songstress, and her stringed soul mate will unspool a night of original storytelling tunes that skillfully melds jazz, pop, comedy and blues.

You can buy her CD on iTunes, Amazon and CDBaby.

Also listen to her songs on ReverbNation.

Freedom Of Choice

jellybean cupcakes at drop i.o party, originally uploaded by nichellest.

I saw these cupcakes with jellybeans at the Drop i.o party In DUMBO and I thought, “Type 2 Diabetes”. I chose not to eat them, mainly because I have indulged this week with cupcakes at Batch with Blondie and Brownie and RKB on Monday Plus  cookies at Crumbs Bakeshop with Mia Bauer. I  also re-met Chrysanthe who work at Outside.in and competed in the Cupcake Cook-off last month.

After the party, I went with the Kap to see Devo. We missed the Tom Tom Club, but it was a blast!

Related: Centernetworks’ blog post about last night’s party.

Graffiti Bridge

By Niche

manhattanbridge cloudy, originally uploaded by nichellest.

Today was fun walking around lower Manhattan and East Village. First, there was a clothing swap at St. Margaret’s House.  Then, my friends and I dodged the rain by walking under the overpass by the East River. We saw the structure for the New York City Waterfalls, a new public art project that will be on display starting  June 26.

Later we went to The Delancey for rooftop BBQ, and later went to listen to experimental music from composer Barney McAll.

Baby, I’m A Star

By Niche

You're With Me, Leather.
Three years ago, I went to an anniversary party for the Derek and Romaine show, and I met Perez Hilton who blogged back then on Page Six Six Six. I also met The Glamazons, who are now pitchwomen for Torrid. Three years ago, I saw Stiffed perform at Scenic which is now Club Midway. The lead singer, Santi White (AKA Santogold) is the sister of a friend of my cousin. Now Santogold and her debut album is coming out in two weeks. Looking back, I am often in the presence of super talented people when they are in the brink of breaking through. It’s cool, and I am often inspired by their grooviness. However, I still don’t know what star to hitch my wagon to.

Should I be a food writer?

Should I be a big blog publisher?

Should I be a small business consultant and expert?

Should I be a comedy producer? Or I be a comedy writer/storyteller?

Should I be a publicist?

I am little bit of all these things already.  However, I must trim the fat and figure out what works. To make a dining analogy, I need to select an entree and two side dishes instead of eating appetizers all day. The problem is that I love potato skins so much!
