The Pale Off and The Brown Paper Bag Test

Over the weekend at a party, I witnessed a weird contest. It was a “pale-off”. Three or four people put their arms next to each to figure out who was whiter. I laughed a little at the ridiculousness as it reminded me of the first day back to school after summer vacation when I was a kid. My schoolmates and I would compare arms to see who got the better tan. My first thought at witnessing the “pale-off” was how everyone is still obsessed with the color of the skin, no matter their race. My second thought is there is an unsettling ease for someone who is White to even make that comparison, since other than more risk of sunburn or skin cancer, there is no repercussion for being very pale or semi-pale. For someone who African African or Latino, there is still discrimination within our community and outside of community. People are still obsessed with color even if don’t know about the “Brown Paper Bag” test.

From Urban Dictionary, “The Brown Paper Bag test is an actual test, along with the so-called ruler test in common use in the the early 1900s among upper class Black American societies and families to determine if a Black person was sufficiently white to gain admittance or acceptance. If your skin was darker than a brown paper bag, you did not merit inclusion.”

Both the “pale-off” and “brown paper bag test” are silly exercises. I hope the historical repercussions of the “brown paper bag test” does not keep a little brown girl or brown boy feel that they can’t be anything they want to be.

The Belated Week in Links (Wedding, Social and The Kid)

Above is the best picture of me since I got chubby. Anyway, it is August and hot. I am going to the movies more to keep cool. Watching “Funny People” last week kept me cool, bu I did not enjoy the movie. I did enjoy attending Publishing Meets Tech Meetup last Monday. Fraser does a great job bringing together people from both industries. Thursday, I went to the Purple Rain Singalong at Prospect Park. It was so much fun. Wednesday, I saw my friend Lee Ann Westover sing at Cafe Steinhof with her talented friends. Saturday, I attended the picnic, wedding and reception for Cat and Kap. Sunday, Cupcakes Take The Cake had its annual collaboration with Jon Friedman and hosted the Delicious Sandwich Social and Cupcake Picnic at Prospect Park. See pictures of the fun on my Flickr.

The Week In Links (Hot Diggity Dog)

The pickled radishes pictured above may look like watermelon, but tastes like a pickle.

Tuesday, I went to the Universal Records Database (URDB) event and it was fun. Erin and Her Cello was the special guest performer and I got to sing backup on a couple of her songs. Yay!

Friday, I got a pint of Jeni’s Salty Caramel ice cream. So good.

There's @niche gettin her chef on. #hotdog09 on Twitpic

Saturday afternoon, I competed in the 4th Annual Hot Dog Cookoff. I didn’t win but I had a blast! Later that night I competed again—in the Housing Works Spelling Bee. I didn’t win but I did well considering I was near delirious from an afternoon of soaking in sun, hot dogs, and Kelso Beer.

Sunday was mellow with shopping at Re/Dress, brunch with the girls at Robin Des Bois and dinner with the Boy at Brookvin. We ate pickled radishes, country pate and lardo.

The Short Week In Links (Afropunk, Hot Dogs,Twitterbook)

July 004

Monday, I went to the CD release party for Adira Amram’s “Hot Jams for Teens”.

Tuesday, I went to a book event at Agency 16 for The Twitter Book by Tim O’Reilly and Sarah Milstein.

Wednesday, I stopped by Blip.tv party.

Friday, I went to Joe’s pub for Erin and Her Cello’s show. It was great! Adira Amram, Carla Rhodes and Shockwave (who is a cast member for PBS’s The Electric Company) were guest stars.

Saturday, I celebrated the 4th of July with friends.

Sunday, I went to AfroPunk Festival at the BAM parking lot. I saw Sweetie, Apollo Heights, Tamar Kali, Peekaboo Theory and Earl Greyhound. I heard a rumor that Living Colour may perform, but it didn’t turn out to be true. All the bands rocked. It was FREE!
